University History

The Lakehead Technical Institute was founded in 1946. The goal at the time was to set up a higher education center that would initially cater to the needs of northwestern Ontario. Founded in 1957 by Lakehead Technical Institute and Lakehead College of Art, Science and Technology, Lakehead University. Teaching at the university began on June 4, 1946, with the approval of the provincial government. Initially, teaching began in temporary rooms in Downtown Port Arthur. In September of that year, the first university courses were added to the curriculum.

 

Lakehead College of Art, Science and Technology was established with the approval of the provincial government on August 1, 1957, a few years after the faculty expanded and newer courses were approved. On July 1, 1965, the Lockheed Institute of Technology and the College of Art, Science and Technology merged and were renamed Lockheed University.
